Normal American is a project that began with research into the cosmetic cultural norms that a newcomer might employ to fit in to American culture. The instructive sentences are both inclusive invitations to participate in a social norm and also statements that address the other. This work began as quill and ink calligraphy on fine rag paper, then was reproduced in an unlimited edition using an offset lithograph printer, and finally as a digital application which re-generated the sentence structure and appearance but scrambled the parts of speech. Through image, text, and digital representation, the phrases have unhindered reach, reflecting the trends of cultural hybridization in this period of globalization.
